New York - Day 2 a Food Tour

One of my travelling companions, Caleb, has a friend that lives in New York and grew up here. She graciously offered to show us around and give us a food tour of some of her favorite places. I'm so glad she did as each place was wonderful and she told us so much about the city. I LOVE having a local person show us around because she gave us insights that no travel app could provide.

At the end of the day we had logged 22,000+ steps and 9+ miles. And surprisingly my feed did not hurt because I was wearing my Rothy's (more to come on that later). Here's a map of every place we visited and with more descriptions below. We walked all over!

We started the morning by meeting my cousins, Walton and Jennifer, at their apartment to drop off our things. Then we headed to meet Vanessa, Caleb's friend, to start our New York food experience.

First Stop - Flatiron Building

Our first stop was the Flatiron Building. I wasn't quite sure what Vanessa meant by flatiron and in my head I was thinking a place that made cast iron skillets. She said it was famous but I didn't know what it was until we arrived. We got off the subway and yep - I knew this building from photos of New York. It's a beautiful building and in it's shadow is a little area with tables to enjoy lunch or take a break. Very cute area!

Second Stop - Eataly

When Vanessa told us we were going to eat Italian - I did not expect anything like this! In my mind, I was thinking a small Italian restaurant, but nope - it's a huge market with small restaurants inside. I would love to shop here for a dinner party or something of that nature. Wow - so many kinds of pasta, cheese, olives, fruits, vegetables, meats, and more.

Sitting down in La Pizza & La Pasta restaurant of Eataly, we formulated a plan for the food tour. We would get small amounts of foods and try it all. This way we would not be so full by the end and we could actually enjoy the food. We got the Calamari con Sugo di Mare and the Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe. Both dishes were amazing!

Third Stop - Birreria Rooftop Bar

Above Eataly is a super cool rooftop bar with a coast of Italy theme. We each got a drink and I tried the beer flight. Who would have thought this whiskey drinking gal would get a beer flight? The flight came in an adorable boat. The beers were (1)  Birra del Borgo Enkir, (2) Baladin Nora, (3), Dogfish Head Seaquench, and (4) Dogfish Head Lupu Luau.

Fourth Stop - Xi'an Famous Foods

This tiny little place has some really good hand pulled noodles that we were able to watch the cook make. We got the Spicy and Tingly Beef Noodles since Caleb and Brian wanted something spicy. It was very tasty but with the spice, I could only eat two bites before getting some jasmine tea.

Fifth Stop - Vanessa's Dumplings

Wow! Just wow! These were little bites of dumpling heaven. We got the shrimp and pork which neither were pan friend. Vanessa asked them to pan fry the pork dumplings and they were delicious. The spice combination in the pork dumplings was divine and the shrimp were so light.

Sixth Stop - Baohaus

Another little gem! This place has dumplings of a different nature. The dough is wrapped around your meat of choice kind of like a taco. The dough has a little bit of a sweet taste and mixed with the pork belly and chicken we got - it was a perfect combination.

Seventh Stop - Artichoke Basille's Pizza

We might have overdone ourselves at this little pizza shop with standing room only. We picked out three pizzas - Crab and Artichoke from Vanessa's recommendation and Pepperoni because it's a staple. Artichoke Basille's pizza is famous for their Artichoke pizza and I can see why - it was light with a cream sauce and not too heavy on the toppings. The crab and pepperoni pizza's were delicious as well. We each could only take a few bites of each type because we were starting to fill-up and much more to go.

Eighth Stop - Papaya Dog

According to Vanessa - this is a late night stop for some food to soak up the alcohol but is also good during the day. The thing to get is a hotdog with grilled onions and a papaya juice. I hear onions and I'm immediately out on the hotdog but was up for the papaya juice. This juice is heavenly! It's sweet with a tang as well. I highly recommend this juice when in need of a refreshment.

Ninth Stop - Milk Bar

This stop we got so many good sweet treats! They have a cereal milk ice cream with cereal crumbles around it. I also got the Compost Cookie (cookie with chocolate chips, pretzels, potato chips and other goodness), Crack Pie (slice of butter pie) and Birthday Cake Truffles (like cake pops but so much better). I took everything but the ice cream to go and ate all the ice cream immediately!

Break

We definitely need a break at this point to empty our stomachs a bit. We walked around a visited cute little shops. After an hour or so - we were ready to visit our final stop.

Tenth Stop - Cafe Habana

What a cute place with a great vibe! The furniture was painted bright colors and the window art was on point. They are famous for their Cuban sandwiches and Grilled Corn Mexican Style. We got both and amazing is all I can say. The meat in the Cuban was so tender and it had an amazing garlic aioli dipping sauce. The corn was covered in cheese and paprika. It was a little messy to eat but completely worth it!

Final Journey

After eating the copious amounts of food - we needed to walk it off. We walked in the general direction of Walton and Jennifer's apartment and wound up near the Hudson River right around sunset. This was breathtaking to view and I'm glad we made the journey!
