4 July 1945

In this letter, Jim went out for the Fourth of July and kept getting whistles, winks and smiles - even the cigarette girl tried to take him home. He describes himself as a wolf and wishes Margaret was there to keep the "wolfesses" off of him (I now know where my sister gets her knack for making up words). You can tell in the letter that he misses Margaret a lot - even wrote that he'd make love to her that night like a "spaniard". At the end, he ends it with "I was pretty well oiled when I wrote this but I'll mail it anyway."

SERIAL NO. 5
FOURTH OF JULY, 1945
Sweetheart..
Well, here's that 'old man' of yours again, and I'm really in the mood. Just got in off of liberty and as today was the Fourth, everybody and his dog was downtown today and tonight. I was honestly whistled at and smiled and winked at more than ever before. Millions of women and the were surely out for me. I ended up drinking a batch of hi-balls and met a shipmate from New Orleans that I used to run around with and he and I got on quite a binge. He finally went back to his ship, and I stopped in at a night club for one more drink. The cigarette girl came over and asked me to take her home. I told her I didn't have any way to take her home, so she told me she had her car outside. Well, after she got off, she ended up taking me back to the ship. I told her that I was a wolf but I was off-duty. Sweet, you should be here to keep these wolfesses off me. I don't know what it is, but they sure go for me. I think it's my innocent young face. Think so? I should be a good boy but honest, there's so much temptation. I think when I get in port next time I will have you come up and you can grab me around the neck and pull me away from these gals. I need someone to look after me. The way things look now, we will be back in the states in September, and you might as well get ready to shove off as soon as I wire you to come. I dont want you to have to wait a week or ten days to get ready or such. Make up your mind now if you can come on a moment's notice. Let me know. I wont take anything short of that. When I get in the states next time, I intend spending all of my time off with you and I do mean you.

Well, it's late. Nearly to thirty in the ayem, and I have to get some sleep. You have spoiled me. Usually I would have made a lot of passes at these gals that go for me, but it seems now I'm no interested. If it means that I only want you, then we'd better get that thing fixed up, the sooner, the better. Remember - next time in, be prepared to come. If this is not agreeable, write me, and let me know.

Darling, I could love you tonight like a spaniard and stuff. Sure wish you were here. Think you would ever get tired of me? I'm going to bed now - going to hit the sack. I'll think of you and hope to have a letter from you soon. Love and kisses.

Jim

[Handwritten] P.S. I was pretty well oiled when I wrote this but I'll mail it anyway. Jim
